Topic hubs

Each hub gathers the guides, glossary terms, questions, and tools for one part of the craft — a curated way in.

The Settings Library

The library answers "what settings for X?" once, canonically, by machine class instead of by SKU. A diode-20w chart is true for every honest 20W-optical diode; your test grid does the last ten percent.

Laser Safety

Safety here is specific, not ceremonial: which materials are never safe (chlorinated plastics — chlorine gas becomes hydrochloric acid), how extraction is sized, why a fire blanket lives within reach, and why a running laser is never alone in the room.

Buying Your First Laser

First-machine advice here starts from your product plan, not the deal of the week. Classes — diode, CO2, fiber — are wavelength decisions that no coupon changes; within a class, real optical wattage and running cost decide value.

Metal Marking

Bare metal is a 1064nm club: fiber and MOPA sources mark stainless, brass, aluminum, and titanium natively, with MOPA’s pulse tuning adding anneal blacks and true color. IR modules are the 2W entry ticket.

The Laser Business

The business desk runs on three numbers: margin per unit after fees and blanks, minutes per unit at sellable quality, and payback-in-orders for every machine purchase. Everything else is decoration.

Materials

Materials are the half of the craft the spec sheet skips. Cast acrylic frosts and extruded doesn’t; plywood glue varies sheet to sheet; veg-tan behaves and faux leather is a hazard; slate wants oil after the burn.

Rotary Engraving

A rotary converts one machine axis into rotation, and converts a laser into a tumbler business. Rollers are the friction-drive starting point; chucks clamp tapers, glassware, and rings.

Air & Filtration

Two different airflows get confused constantly: air assist (the jet at the nozzle that cleans the cut) and extraction (the system that removes smoke from the room). You need both, sized separately.
