Ramp test
Tilted line finds focus
A ramp test props one end of a scrap board up, then engraves a straight line across the slope. The line is thinnest exactly where the surface passes through focus — measure that height and you have your focal distance.
It costs one strip of scrap and two minutes, and it settles focus arguments better than any spec sheet.
