Wavelength
Decides material absorption
Wavelength determines which materials absorb the beam: ~455nm (diode) suits organics and coatings, 10,600nm (CO2) suits organics plus acrylic and glass, 1064nm (fiber/IR) suits bare metal.
Every "can it engrave X?" question is really a wavelength question. No setting rescues a material that reflects or transmits your source.
