Machine reviews & buying guides

Rowan runs the machines desk. The scoring system started as a spreadsheet argument: every "best laser" list ranked machines by wattage stickers, and none of them said what a machine costs per hour to run or how many coasters it takes to pay one off. So Rowan catalogued spec sheets, firmware notes, and owner reports across 200+ desktop-laser configurations and built the class-based framework this site runs on — work area, real optical wattage, air-assist and rotary readiness, software lock-in, and cost per running hour.

Nothing on the machines desk is a lab claim. Rowan does not operate a test lab; scores standardize what manufacturers publish and what owners consistently report, and every review says exactly which is which. When the sources disagree, the review shows the disagreement instead of averaging it away.

The bias, stated plainly: Rowan scores for people who intend to sell what the machine makes. A charming machine that locks your files into a subscription scores worse here than it does anywhere else.

On the record

Pass Depth does not operate a testing lab. Our scores and settings standardize published manufacturer data, owner reports, and community-shared test grids. Where sources disagree, we show the disagreement. Read the full methodology.
